Master bedroom retreat ~ The Plan

MasterRetreatThePlan | Vin'yet Etc.

The plan, what the heck does that mean? Actually the real plan is to have a less hideous place to sleep, it’s really as simple as that and you’ll know exactly what that means if you’ve read, Master Bedroom Retreat ~ Intro.

Here’s a little reminder image for you, this is the very beginning of this massive project… WOW, looking at this now, I can’t even believe we slept up here for over a year. Am I right? What do you think of those colours!?

What Mr. and I really want is a retreat, a welcoming and cozy getaway that is completely us. The orange and the blue… errr and the pink and green, just weren’t cutting it.

Here is a plan view of what we were/are thinking. We still have a fair bit of work ahead of us but if you follow along on Instagram and FB you know we are a little further along than the photo above, thank-goodness!

It’s a little surprising how much work making 2 rooms into one large room really is. Once the wall was down we had an open space… with two doors, two light fixtures, two smoke detectors… well you get the point. The plan above is the technical stuff… the stuff that seems long and tedious but it all has to be done and it has to be done right, especially when you are married to Mr. Meticulous, like I am. 😉 I can’t wait to show you some of the crazy projects that have been happening around here to make that one big room… I think I’ve ingested enough drywall dust to last a lifetime.

Now onto the fun part… the look and the feel of our master retreat.

Here is the concept board we created… we were going for romantic and rustic with a monochromatic feel, a soothing and calming place to be. I think we’ve captured exactly what we want with this concept board, I love the look and feel of this board and we are working very hard to stay close to this, but with all things real life… concept isn’t always completely possible.

MasterRetreatThePlan | Vin'yet Etc. I love mixing rustic with refined, my heart truly belongs to farmhouse, vintage and industrial it’s a very eclectic style. Is there one category for all of that?

As a Designer, I truly get the style categories and the requirements for them… I just can’t make myself fit into any one clear mold. It’s a hard question for me to answer when someone asks me, “what’s your style”? I love all styles and usually what I end up telling people, especially when I’m in an antique or vintage store, I like what I like and if I like it enough I’ll buy it. Ha ha, of course it  also has to fit into my cheapo (frugal) budget.  I’m FAR from an expert on antiques, vintage or even design trends… I just have a way of knowing what speaks to me and as strange as that sounds I put all of those different styles together and it all just works… for us, and for what we love in our home. That’s what style comes down to for me, what makes us or you happy, what makes life a little easier and prettier… that’s our approach. The “must” have elements for us though are; comfort, texture, function and contrast.  I sure hope you like our choices so far and that you’ll stick around to see how this concept comes to life, I’m pretty excited.

Your choices are beautiful. Hope you have better luck with your closet door plan than I did, not one vintage door was tall enough to fit my closet opening.

Haha, funny you should say that… we did have to lower the header, especially after straightening them, as you know no old house is straight and those doors were custom fit for an older home. 🙂 I’ll dish on that soon.

Definitely lots of work involved, but hard work is worth it’s ‘wait’! I love your concept board and can see what you are going for – I have no doubt you will achieve the look and feel no matter what ‘real life’ interjects along the way. And on the note of personal style(s) – I get the mixed bag of styles completely. I have always believed that if you build a collection over time and it is based on pieces that you love, it will work. And I know that idea is contra to the design ‘rules’, but I have found it’s worked for me in the way you have described it works for you, too! 🙂

A big job, but it will be worth it!! A friend recently told me to be patient as our bathroom renovation dragged on. She said renovating is like a long flight to an anticipated destination – once you get there, you’ll forget how long the journey was. As I sat in my new big tub the other night, I remembered those words and she was right.

Question: How did you create that graphic?

Oh I love your mood board Laurie, that’s going to look beautiful!! All your hard work and planning will be worth it in the end (anything BUT those hockey team colours – orange, green and blue, whaaaa???) That’s a cool plan pic you put up too, gives a really good idea what you’re doing!!

Looks great! It also looks like it fits with your style and that it would fulfill any and all retreat needs. Well done 🙂 I would sleep there! ha!
